James Cooper was born in Wayne Co. KY, and is belived to be the son of William and Susannah Cooper. He served in the 1st AL & TN Vidette Cavalry during the Civil War and applied for a pension from the United States. He died before the pension could be processed, but his widow later drew the pension. Acording to the pension application, he married Lucinda Hawkins on May 2, 1847. There is a stained glass window in the Valley Head Baptist Church that is dedicated to James and Lucinda Cooper.
