Nancy Clark Jean was born Feb. 16, 1937, in Fort Worth to Mary McDonald and George Clark. Nancy was a fifth-generation Texan, a descendent of the Smith and Kennard colonists who came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin in the early 1820s.
Nancy grew up on a farm in Hill County near Covington. In 1853, Covington was founded by her great-great-grandfather, Col. James Gathings. Nancy was valedictorian of her high school class. She always said it was not a big deal since there were only 12 in her class. From these childhood years she continued to cherish and reunite with Covington friends throughout the last 55 years. Those that knew her understand why she was valedictorian and it was a big deal. She applied herself in high school with the same effort and determination that she did in raising her children and grandchildren while shaping their character and values. Nancy regretted that she did not complete a college degree but family, jobs and moving so often kept getting priority so finally she evolved into taking only courses on subjects in which she was interested.
Nancy married Jimmy Jean on June 24, 1955, and for the next 19 years, as a military family, they traveled and moved and moved! They were assigned to 11 Air Force bases in six states and three foreign countries. She was proud to have served her country in that way. During her career as a military wife, the military person was expected to go where ordered, when ordered. The job always came first. Nancy raised the kids and created a home, made excuses for Jimmy for what he missed and not always being around when he should. While she was appreciated more than she realized, like other military wives, she never received much glory for her sacrifices. She was never more proud than when she was standing with her hand over her heart while "The Star-Spangled Banner" was playing. The family retired from the military and moved to Austin in 1974.
Nancy worked for the Internal Revenue service for 20 years, retiring in 1997. For the past 11 and 1/2 years she has worked part time as a manager, receptionist at a showroom at the Dallas Trade Center in Dallas.
In her retirement years she traveled, especially with her grandchildren, shopped, quilted, crocheted, gardened, exercised, met with the Lunch Bunch, played Bunko, walked and loved her dog, Angel, but best of all she spent time with her grandchildren. Being "Granny" was the delight and joy of her life. The last 26 years with the grandchildren were the best of times.
"I miss thee my mother. Thy image is still the deepest impressed on my heart."-- Eliza Cook
Our heart-felt thanks to all our family, friends and neighbors who were so loving and supportive during Nancy's illness. Nancy was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love.
She was predeceased by her parents and a stepgrandson, Christopher Ernie.
Survivors: She is survived by her husband of 54 1/2 years, Jimmy Wayne Jean; son, Bruce Jean; daughter, Denise Page and husband, Shuler; granddaughter, Emily Patterson and husband, Blake; granddaughter, Laura Berggren; and stepgrandson, Travis Page. Also surviving are her brother, George Clark and wife, Ann; beloved sister, Priscilla Hunt and husband, Robert; beloved sister-in-law, Sondra Jones; and treasured lifelong friend, Annette Rager Howard; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are the young people who called her "Granny" all their lives: Jori, Chase, Shanna, Karly, Kendall, Garrett, Trevor, Clayton, Ty, Chloe and Skyler; and her best friend, "Angel" dog. She loved her family and built a lifetime of beautiful memories for them to cherish. (Time: 12:10AM 4/25/2010)
