William C. Ward, aged 81 years, 10 months & 11 days, a resident of Greenville for many years, died at 3 a.m., Friday at St. Joseph's hospital at Highland following 2 strokes of paralysis. Two years ago he sustained a stroke & had been at the hospital since that time. A week ago he sustained a second stroke & gradually grew worse until the end came.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., sunday at Mt. Gilead church west of Greenville, the Rev. R. T. Hickerson, pastor of the Greenville Christian church, officiating, & burial was made in Mt. Gilead cemetery.
The pall bearers were H. W. Baker, Dallas Newby, George Meyer, Alfred Laville, Chas. Kneier & Clarence Schrumpf.
Mr. Ward was born 05Sep1849 in the Old Ripley settlement west of Greenville, a son of Charles & Mary Ward. On 28Nov1872, he married Miss Mary Hunter & to them 7 children were born. Four daughters have died. Mrs. Ward survives with 3 children, Waler S. Ward, a tinner of Greenville; Miss Florence Ward, a teacher at Inglis school of Greenville; & Miss Orah Ward, secretary to Former Congressman Ed M. Irwin of Belleville.
Mr. Ward was the last of his family. In his younger life he was converted in a Methodist meeting & was quite active in church work.
The body was removed from the hospital to the Bass Funeral Home & on Saturday morning was taken to the home of his daughter, Miss Florence Ward, where it remained until time for the funeral Sunday.
