Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Ward, an old & highly respected resident of this city, passed away at 9 p.m. Friday at her home, 620 Cooper St., after an illness of over 6 years duration.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Greenville Christian church, the Rev. Ronald T. Hickerson, the pastor, officiating & burial was made at Mt. Gilead cemetery west of town. A mixed quartet composed of Don Smith, Melvin F. Watson & Mrs. R. T. Hickerson & Mrs. Kemp Harris sang.
The pallbearers were Lester McKee, Ralph Friedlein, Oliver Tremblay, A. L. LaBille, Edison Heston & Thomas Wilson.
Mrs. Ward was a daughter of the late Marshall & Elizabeth (Glenn) Hunter, early pioneer settlers of the west side of Bond Co. She was born near Old Ripley, 02Feb1853 & was aged 84 years, 8 months & 20 days.
On 25Nov1872, she was united in marriage to Wm. C. Ward who died several years ago. The ceremony was performed by Elder Peter Long, a Baptist minister at the home of her parents.
Surviving are 1 son Alderman Walter Scott Ward, a well-known Greenville sheet metal worker, Miss Orah Ward, superintendent of the Bond Co. Welfare Commission & Miss Florence Ward, a teacher at Inglis school; 5 grandchildren; & 2 great-grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Alice Cochran wife of W. W. Cochran also survives. Two children died in infancy. A daughter, Goldie, died at the age of 4; & Miss Cordie died at the age of 28 years.
Mrs. Ward united with the Mt. Gilead Cumberland Presbyterian church in early girlhood & about 10 years ago, placed her membership with the Greenville Christian church.
Those from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Finger of Springfield; Mrs. Thelma Haller of Roxana; Mr. & Mrs. Rusel Hunter of Marion; Mrs. Laura Gloss of New Mexico; & Mrs. Nellie Ward & daughter, Mary Ellen of Highland; Mr. & Mrs. Earl Sheperd, Miss Fern Sheperd & Henry Koch of Marine.
