William Ross arrived in New Orleans on December 15, 1847, with his father Benjamin and his sister Rebecca. They came on the barque (ship) "Thames" from Yorkshire, England. They traveled up the Mississippi River to join another sister Ann and her husband William Newton in Perry County, Illinois. The families are listed in the 1850 Federal Census and the men are farmers. William became the 1st husband of Lydia Yearian on February 28, 1856. They appear in the 1860 census at Perry County, Illinois. They moved to Iowa, and in 1880 they were in Erving, Jewell County, Kansas. Here he became a naturalized citizen and was granted 160 acres of homestead land. He left Lydia and they were divorced in 1896. In 1910, at age 80 he lived with his son Charles in Coolidge, Hamilton County, Kansas. He died in 1915 from accidentally falling out of a wagon. His grave is unmarked.

"A few from here attended the funeral of Mr. Ross, at Byron Monday, who died Saturday from the effects of a runaway he was in Thursday. Mr. Ross was 83 years old and well and active when he came to this untimely end. The family have our sympathy."
