Fort Wayne man is killed in accident
Louis Scharpenberg, 79, of Fort Wayne Route 7, was killed shortly after noon Thursday when his car and two others collided on U.S. 27 at the Tillman Road, south of Fort Wayne.
Police reported Kent D. Steiner, 18, of Geneva Route 1, driver of one of the other cars, said he was traveling south on U.S. 27 in a through traffic lane and Scharpenberg was in the right turn lane, also southbound.
Steiner said that as they approached the intersection, Scharpenberg suddenly swerved left into Stiener's path, and the Geneva lad's car struck the other broadside, then careened into a car stopped in the left land, driven by Diana Koehlinger, 23, of Monroeville Route 2.
Stiener and two passengers in his car, Alice M. Steiner of Geneva Route 1, and Sherry L. Schwartz, 18, of Berne Route 1, were treated at Lutheran Hospital for minor bumps and bruises.
