Keeler Condon turned from sports to council

Keeler "Bud" Condon made sports a huge part of his early life on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He played football all four years at the Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High school, participated in track and excelled in basketball. He was on the team in 1959 when they won the State "B" championship and went to the State "B" tourney three of his four years of high school.

After graduating from Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School in 1951, he played with the All American Indian Semi-Pro team. He considered himself fortunate to have played with many talented teammates throughout his career, and kept in touch through the years with his high school basketball coach, Gus Kolb, who now lives in Mission, Texas.

Keeler continued his education and was certified as a Building and Trades professional and worked in this field many years. He would get contracts with his cousin, Duane Standing Bear, moving to wherever the work took them. He later became a bus driver for Takini School until 2002 when he was elected to Tribal Council, serving a four-year term. After serving as a councilman, he retired.

Keeler entered the Spirit World on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, in Eagle Butte at the age of 68.

Keeler, whose native name of "Lktomi Kuwapi" or "Cannot Be Fooled," was born to Esther Between Lodge and Clarence "Bud" Condon in Porcupine on the Pine Ridge Reservation on May 5, 1941. He went to school at the Oglala Community School until 1953 and then continued school in Cherry Creek and the Cheyenne Agency. The school later moved to Eagle Butte, where he graduated from high school.

He married Bonnie Dupris and a daughter, Della, was born to their union. Later, he married Flora Yellow Boy and they had two children, Gerald and Sharon. Frieda came into his life in 1974. Their union brought two boys, Eugene and Keeler II and it was a marriage that lasted 34 years.

Survivors are his wife Frieda; four children, Della, Gerald, Eugene and Keeler II; stepchildren, Aaron and Josie LaBlanc; brothers, Harold (Geraldine) Condon and Monte; sisters, Julie Riley-Condon and Bonita (Morris Little Shield) Condon; half-sisters, Clarice Condon-Lara, Rilla Condon-Noisy Hawk and Ethleen Mary Buck Elk Thunder; 16 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. On his father's side of the family there is only Ellen Condon-In The Woods and on his mother's side only Daniel Afraid Of Hawk is left of that generation.

Keeler was preceded in death by his mother, Esther Between Lodge; father, Clarence "Bud" Condon; brothers, Ira and Gerald Condon; sisters, Bernice Condon-Hale and Lavonne Condon; nephews, Kerwin Condon and Jake Hale; niece, Melisa Hale; daughter, Sharon Condon; and stepdaughter, Dyan LaBlanc.

Funeral services for Keeler were Friday, April 9, at the Community Building in Cherry Creek. Father Les Campbell and Deacon Hazel Red Bird officiated. Burial was at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cemetery at Cherry Creek under the direction of the Stout Family Funeral Home of Mobridge.

Casketbearers were Aaron LaBlanc, D'Boy Condon, Christen Condon, Lloyd Harrison, Everett Condon, Tyron Mexican, Chris Mexican, Richard Red Elk, Collins Holy, Wade Kingfisher, Michael Dupris, Louie Johnson, Tune Bowker and Carlos Mexican.

The procession that preceded the services met at First Timber Thursday to proceed to the Community Building for the wake.
