Nobility. Duchess of Orleans. Born the daughter of Karl I Ludwig, Elector of the Rhine Palatinate and his first wife Charlotte of Hessen-Kassel. In 1671 she became the second wife of Philippe I of Orléans, brother of King Louis XIV of France. She had a closer relationship with Louis than with her husband, who preferred the companionship of his favourite the Chevalier de Lorraine. Upon Madame de Maintenon becoming Louis' mistress, the relationship cooled down because the two women could not stand each other. When Louis died in 1715 her son Philippe became regent for the young Louis XV and Liselotte the first woman in the state. Liselotte is mostly known for her correspondence. She wrote most of her letters to her aunt Sophie of Hanover, mother of King George I. Therein she described persons and situations she witnessed at the court in her own style of French.
