Dorothy I. Zickel, 88, of Newton died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County — Monarch Wing or First United Methodist Church and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.
The daughter of James H. and B. Kate (Shelley) Van Baren, she was born March 11, 1917, in Prairie City. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1935. On Feb. 10, 1946, she married Merle P. Zickel at Mt. Zion Church in rural Newton. She was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a seamstress and also enjoyed tatting, cooking and working with her husband when they lived on the farm.
Mrs. Zickel was a member of First United Methodist Church and a 4-H leader. She was a lifelong resident of Newton.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn (Larry) Milburn of Newton; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Margaret (Robert) Finn of Newton; a brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother.
