#5-1 Daniel Griest, b. 10-9 or 12-20-1737, d. 7-7-1787 of John Griest & Susannah Pyle, m. 12-21-1759 recorded on page 35 Warrington Mtg. records, Ann Rogers, d. 1791, of Andrew Rogers & Rebecca Garretson. The marriage certificate states Ann of Andrew but does not give the mother's name. William & Mary Garretson were the only Garretson's that signed the certificate. They would be William and Mary Frazier. He was a brother of Rebecca's. The following was probably written by A. William Griest (b. 6-5-1846) in Feb. 1916 "An incident of more than ordinary interest occurred in the family. (Susannah Griest, b. 11-8-1796) Susannah's paternal grandfather (Daniel Griest, b. 10-9-1737) was a man who was highly respected and influential in the community. He had a neighbor who had a son who was incorrigible, but this man, Daniel Griest, could sometimes quiet him. They sent for him one day to come over as the boy was behaving in a bad way. Just as he got in the house the young man came downstairs with a rifle in his hand. Grandfather said, "Why thee don't intend to shoot me." Just then he put the gun to his shoulder and shot him in the breast. They carried him out in the orchard where died that evening. According to their way of stating, it happened on the 7th day of the week, the 7th day of the month, the 7th month of the year 1777. The murder was finally acquitted on the plea of insanity. (The year 1777 was probably incorrect as July 7th came on a Monday that year, but it did come on a Saturday in 1787. Also Daniel had a son Levi, b. 11-1-1780.) On 7-22-1891, Tabitha Griest (b. 12-24-1839) wrote to Charles W. Griest (b. 2-2-1832) as follows: "I can't tell just when they (John Griest, b. 2-22-1764, and Miriam Cleaver, b. 8-15-1767) were married (it was 5-17-1787) but our great-grandfather (Daniel Griest, b. 10-9-1737) was shot (7-7-1787) in less then one year after grandfather was married." Daniel and Ann lived in Monaghan Twp., York Co. Mt. Pleasant is in Monaghan Twp.
