The Coverts came originally from Holland and settled in eastern Pennsylvania, where Morris Covert, Sr. was born in 1776. He married there, and one child was born east of the mountains. About 1800, Morris Covert, Sr. and family came to western Pennsylvania, and located on a farm ten miles north of Allegheny City. They subsequently removed to Butler County about 1802 and settled in Cranberry Township (in what is now Jackson Township), not far from the site of Evans City. He was the progenitor of the Covert family in Butler County, Pa., and became an extensive land owner and was quite prominent among the pioneers of that locality.

Morris Covert is listed on the Taxables list for 1803 with 200 acres in Connoquenessing Township, Butler Co., Pa., valued at $100 and assessed $30 tax. (History of Butler County, pg. 50)

Morris Covert and his family are listed on the 1810, 1820, and 1830 Cranberry Township, Butler Co.. Pennsylvania, censuses.

He served in the War of 1812 and resided in Cranberry Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, until his death, January 13, 1839. His sons (Isaac Covert, John Covert, & Samuel Covert) were appointed administrators of his estate on 02/17/1839. (Butler County, PA, Estate Records, C-46, 1839-1847)

His widow, Anna (Covert) Covert, survived until April 3, 1841. They were the parents of quite a large family, and were founding members of the Plains Presbyterian Church, in which body he served as Elder.

There is a record "Articles of Agreement between the heirs of Maurice Coovert" recorded in Butler Co., Pa., dated February 23, 1839. "Whereas Morris Coovert late of Cranberry Township Butler County now deceased. Shortly before his death did make and execute a certain instrument of writing which he intended as his last will and testament which instrument owing to some informality in the execution cannot be established as the last will of the said Morris and whereas we the undersigned the heirs and children of the said Morris Coovert being and desirous anxious that the will of our father in the disposition of his estate should be observed have thought proper and do intend by his instrument of writing so far as we have power to carry the same into effect. which instrument of writing we do severally agree devised and bequeathed his estate as follows. viz in the words following. viz: And first after paying my debts and other expenses I bequeath to MY beloved WIFE ANNY COOVERT all my movable property and household furniture and the rents if ones and profits of the farm on which I now reside for her own use and the maintenance of MY DAUGHTER MARGARET who I allow to have her living with her mother so long as she lives, and in case her mother should die before her the boys owning the place must pay two thirds of her maintenance as Josiah is to pay one third of the expense of her keeping; Second, I will and bequeath to MY SON ISAAC all my right to the remaining part FATHER IN LAW JOHN COOVERTs estate late of Northumberland County and also a lot of ground which I purchased from Robert Boggs and containing two and a half acres. Third I will and bequeath to MY SON JOHN one hundred and twenty five acres of land on which he now resides together with twenty five acres, which got from Samuel Coovert, Fourth I will and bequeath to MY SON SAMUEL the place he sold to Titheon. Sixth I will and bequeath to MY SON PHILIP seventy five acres of land on which he now resides, Seventh I will and bequeath to MY SON MORRIS all that part of my place lying North and East of the road or laine leading from James Ramseys to Samuel Cooverts. Eighth I will and bequeath to MY SON DANIEL one half of the reaminder of my place and MY SON BENJAMIN the remainder to be divided so as to give Benjamin the house barn and orchard to be divided in quantity and quallity, I will and bequeath to MY DAUGHTER PRISCILLA fifty acres of the land which I purchased from John O'Conner to be run off the East end, Tenth I will unto DAUGHTER ANNY one hundred dollars and lastly at the death of my beloved wife all the moveable and household property remaining of mine in her possession shall be devided equally among the four children that has to maintain THEIR SISTER MARGARET viz. Morris Josiah Daniel and Benjamin, and whereas the scrivenor in drawing the will neglected without any design whatever to insert that part which Josiah was to have to wit. one hundred and ten acres more or less on which the said Josiah lives it is here inserted and is to be considered as if inserted in the written will and further for the purpose of promoting this agreement and in part consideration thereof it is agreed between the undersigned that Isaac Covert shall have and enjoy in fee sixty two acres of land more or less being the remander of the tract of land purchased by the said Morris Coovert from John O Conner, and also, that ANNY RAMSEY formerly ANNY COOVERT shall have and enjoy in fee a certain lot of ground in Eavinsburg, and that all the rest and residue of the estate whether real or personal shall be equally divided between the undersigned the children and heirs at law of the said Morris Coovert, and it is hereby further agreed between the undersigned that the devisees and also Josiah hold their respective pieces of land in fee and that the cross in the ground shall desend as if the respective parties under the said will of the said Morrice Coovert and we do further severally agree with one another that the true meaning and intent of the said will shall govern the constructure of this contract and further we do mutually covenant each and severally unto one and all, for ourselves our heirs executors administrators and assigns, that we will at any time when called upon for they purpose, execute to each other a releas or releases of all our interests, or interist in the several pieces of property above described, to the persons or person to they are severally assigned or to their respective heirs or representatives according to the true intent and meaning of this contract an dit is further agreed that the legacy of one hundred dollars bequeathed to Ann Ramsey shall be paid out of the personal estate (and if there is not sufficient of personal estate to pay the said legacy and, debts the undersigned agree to contribute towards the same in equal shares) In witness whereof we have heare unto mutually, and severally set our hands and seals this 23d day of February A.D. one thousand eight hundred thrity nine.

Personally appeared before me a Justice of the peace in and for said county Isaac Covert, John Coovert, Samuel Covert, Phillip Coovert, Morris Coovert, Josiah Coovert, Daniel Coovert, Benjamin Coovert, John Hall and Priscilla Hall his wife Late Priscilla Coovert James Ramsey Anne Ramsey his wife Late Anne Coovert who executed the foregoing instrument of writing and acknowledged the same to be their act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned PRISCILLA WIFE of the said JOHN HALL and ANNE wife of the said JAMES RAMSEY being both of full age and by me examinid separate and apart from their said husbands, the conrents of this instrument of writing having been fully made known and explained to them be me, acknowledged that they executed the same of their own free will and accord, and without any coalition or compedsion from the said heirs hand. In testimony where I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 23d day of February A.D. 1839. Samuel Kirk. Recorded February 28th 1839."
