At the time of his marriage, he gave his birthdate as June 15, 1858. He was probably born three years earlier on June 15, 1955, since he could not have been born after his christening. He immigrated to the United States sometime between 1885 and 1887 and was naturalized in 1892. On November 22, 1891, he married Elizabeth "Bessie" Byrne.
