Ernest C. Shumway Jr., 76, of Sterling, died May 10, 1996 in Sterling.
Visitation and viewing began at noon today at the Chaney-Walters Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Chaney-Walters with the Rev. Michael Paulison officiating. Ser vices will conclude at the funeral home. Mr. Shumway was born Oct. 3, 1919, to Ernest and Mary (Ferguson) Shumway in Walsenburg. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic in the First Special Forces and as a Sergeant in the 474th Infantry Regiment. He was an active member of the Green Thumb Project at the Sterling Public Library and was a life member of the Sterling Elks
Lodge No. 1336. He is survived by two daughters, Marcia Henry and husband Dallas of Sterling and Terri Bredehoft of Fort Collins; a sister, Aithea Acre of Security; and long time companion Ramona Vineyard and children Patrick, Kevin, Timothy, Jeffrey, Darren and Corrine; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son Rick in 1994; and a sister, Elsie Bigg on May 5, 1996.Memorial contributions may be made to the Ernest C. Shumway Memorial Fund.
In July 2013, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded, collectively, to the First Special Service Force (FSSF) in recognition of its superior service during World War II. On February 3, 2015 surviving FSSF Veterans were in Washington DC to accept this momentous recognition on behalf of their fellow Forcemen who could not be there.
