Here lies Peter Dillon, son of John Dillon and Rachel Hamilton of Greene Co. PA and Monroe Co., Ohio. The first record we have of him is his acquisition of land near the current Monroe Co., Ohio community of Lewisville, in 1833. This early transaction is followed by at least thirty-seven similar subsequent transactions,1833-1853. At about this time Peter married Jane Moore with whom he fathered at least nine children prior to her death in 1854. In 1855 Peter married Julia Ann May (1838-1911), with whom he fathered eight more children. Shortly after this second marriage, Peter is listed as living in Clarington, on the Ohio River. He became involved in the warehouse and hotel business. The census lists him as a tavern owner. After military service in the Civil War, Peter, with his family, resettled to Wheeling, WV. From "A History of the Panhandle" published in 1879, we have excerpts as follows: "Peter Dillon …… has had some twenty-five years experience in stock dealing, alike in the eastern and western markets. He is at present commission salesman for the Wheeling Stock Yard Company, and has filled that capacity with much satisfaction every since the formation of the said company. At the breaking out of the war he was a ready volunteer, becoming attached to the 116th Ohio regiment, which he entered as First Lieutenant, in 1861, and having served three years, retired as a captain. He was principally in the Shanandoah Valley, and was in the famous battle of Richmond under Sheridan's command, but escaped serious injury." While in the 116th, he was attached to Co. E. There are several other Dillon family members who served in the distinguished 116th including Peter's younger brother, John, in Co. F. Peter's daughter, Ida Dillon Crumbacker (1860-1902), lies buried next to her father.
