MOORESBORO Mr. George Garland Tom Bess, 83, of 3439 Belaire Road, Mooresboro,
and a part-time resident of Oak Island, died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Autumn
Care in Forest City.
He was an engineer with the North Carolina Department of Transportation for 33
years. He served in the Army in the European Theatre in World War II. He was a
member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and attended Sandy Run Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Richard and Blanche Canipe Bess;
two brothers, Paul and Bruner Bess; and a sister, Sue Bess Dycus.
He is survived by his wife, Selma Philbeck Daves Bess; a daughter and her
husband, Hilda and Tony Blanton of Shelby; three sons and their wives, Hugh and
Carolyn Bess and Harold and Sharon Bess, all of Shelby, and Ted and Freda Daves
of Buckingham, Va.; five grandchildren, Rodney Bess, Chris Bess, Laura Blanton,
Carl Blanton and Alecia Daves-Johnson; five great grandchildren; two brothers
and their wives, Wayne and Margie Bess of Kings Mountain and Walter and Frankie
Bess of Waco; sister, Sethelle Hoyle of Charlotte, and two sisters and their
husbands, Maxine and John Wilson of Columbia, S.C., and Jeanette and J. P.
Bridges of Shelby.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with
Rev. Andy Oliver officiating. Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Cleveland Funeral Services.
