Graveside services for Helena Rush, 87, of Alamosa, Colo., former Plainview resident will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Plainview Cemetery with Bettye Givens officiating. Cremation was by Rogers Family Mortuary Crematory of Alamosa.

Mrs. Rush died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, in San Luis Care Center in Alamosa.

She was born Oct. 9, 1916, in Souwilopa, Ala., the daughter of the late Monroe and Susie Loftin Carroll, and grew up in the Plainview area. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1935 and lived in Plainview most of her life. She was active in the Christian Science Society and held many elected and volunteer positions in the organization.

She was a life member of Parent-Teacher Association and enjoyed baking for friends and family and gardening. She had been a band sponsor, a Little League mother and a DeMolay mother.

On Jan. 11, 1962, she married Patton "Pat" Debs Rush in Plainview. He died Sept. 24, 2003.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Frankie Hembree of Plainview and Glenn "Eddie" and Cynthia Hembree of Perry, Okla.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mittie Sue Goff of Plainview and Nancy and Montie Steiwig of Abilene; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Mary Carroll of Levelland and Willis and Mildred Carroll and William and Pat Carroll, all of Amarillo; a sister, Murtice Nesbitt of Fort Worth; three stepdaughters; a stepson; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Jessica and Terry Hembree-Lee of South Korea, Tanya and Joel Buckley of Austin, Jarrett Steiwig of Lubbock, Patricia and Chris Ward of Waverly, Fla., Craig and Mollie Steiwig of Abilene, Celeste and Kirk Smith of Plainview, and Crystal and Jimmy Thompson and Brandi Hembree, all of Perry, Okla.; eight great-grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.

Her first husband, Herchiel Hembree, died May 8, 1961. Her brother, Maxie Carroll; a sister, Nell Carroll Cosby; a stepson; a stepgranddaughter; and a stepgrandson also are deceased.

The family suggests memorials to San Luis Care Center, 240 Craft Dr., Alamosa, CO 81101 or to the PKD Foundation.
