Sam Boyd, Sr., my grandfather, was born in Somerset, KY and grew up to be a coal miner. He married Mahala Ridings in 1915 while working in a coal mine in Tennessee. They later moved to Harlan County, Kentucky where they raised four daughters and two sons. According to my mother, Betty Boyd Swartz, he was killed in a mine when the roof collapsed on him. He is buried in Rainbow Cemetery in Verda, KY.
