My mother, Betty Jean Boyd Swartz, was born in Harlan County, Kentucky in 1924. She was the daughter of a coal miner, Samuel Loman Boyd and Mahala Winnie Ridings Boyd. She often remarked that they were so poor at that time that they scarcely noticed the Great Depression when it struck the United States in the late 20's. Her father was killed in a mine when she was a child and her mother re-married another miner, Homer Byrd. In 1944, she moved north to Indiana to work at General Electric Co. in Fort Wayne and after WWII, she met and married my father, John Wesley Swartz. They had five children; Michael, Patrick (myself), Rex, Bonita, and John, Jr.

Although she worked outside the home from time to time, she was, for the most part, a housewife who deeply cared for her children. She was a devoted wife and mother and has been missed every day since she died on April 4, 2006. She is survived by four sons, a daughter, five grandchildren and four gr-grandchildren.
