YORK - Samuel "Sam" Robert Ballard, 87, of York, died Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, S.C.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 11, at Bratton Funeral Home. The Rev. Harry Bryant will be officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.
Sam was a son of the late Samuel Ballard and Mattie Kirven Ballard. He was the widower of Thelma Sue Hudgins Ballard.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, where he recieved two purple hearts, a bronze star, and numerous other honors.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Robbie Vallejos of York, S.C.; sons and daughters-in-law, Sammy and Kathy Ballard of Clover, Roddy and Debbie Ballard of Salisbury, N.C., Kirk and Jackie Ballard of Walhalla, S.C., Billy and Bobbie Ballard of Charleston, S.C.; sister, Emily Mahek of Darlington, S.C.; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, April 10, at Bratton Funeral Home.
