James Hiram Jackson served in the War of 1812 from 27 April, 1812 until 26 Oct. 1812 enlisting in Dayton, Ohio. His commander was Gen. William Hull who arrived at Dayton on May 25, 1812 and left with his troops numbering 1500 men, including James Jackson, and marched to Detroit and entered Canada on July 12, 1812. Soon Hull began to worry about his supply line being cut by the Indians. He fell back to Detroit and called for aid from the Ohio and Michigan militia which were slow to respond. Hull and his men were faced by the British force, shortage of provisions, inadequate gun powder and the prospect of a general Indian massacre. He had never gained complete control of his army which consisted largely of Ohio volunteers and did little to change their undisciplined character.

Hull surrendered Detroit on Aug. 16, 1812 beginning the war on a mournful note of failure for the United States. Following the surrender, Hull and most of the regulars were placed on board ships and taken to Montreal to be held until regularly exchanged. Hull was dishonored but the forces under him were completely exonerated.
