"Funeral services for Ernest Noble Bates, 71, Mendon, were held Jan. 9 at the Leipard Funeral Home, Mendon, with the Rev. Lawrence Hern officiating. Mr. Bates died Jan. 7 at Pershing Memorial Hospital, Brookfield.

He was born Dec. 16, 1904, in Baker City, Ore., the son of Lilly Rose and Samuel Nelson Bates. He moved with his family to the Hale community at the age of one and lived there until he married, April 15, 1925, to Verda Maurine Atherton.

Mr. Bates worked for the Mendon Mercantile, the Indian Grove and Sumner telephone exchanges, and owned his own grocery store in Triplett. He owned and operated the Bates Goose Processing Plant in Sumner before retiring. His wife preceded him in death in September 1975. He was also preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters.

He is survived by two sons, Larry Bates of Mendon and Bobby Bates, Keytesville; two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Keith of Centerville, Iowa and Mrs. Ernestine Milazzo of Mesa, Arizona; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One sister, Frances Dulaney of Laclede, also survives.

Burial was in the Hale Cemetery."
