Birth Date: 05 Dec 1890

Birthplace: C. C. (Cedar Creek) Grade,

Race: White

Father's Name: William R. Newlin

Mother's Name: Margaret E. Newlin

(Noted): Bessie Virginia Newlin was born on December 5th, 1890, in Back Creek, Frederick Co, Va., because her birth is listed under the (Frederick County Virginia Births) which showed: Bessie Newlin (b) Dec. 5th, 1890; listing her (parents) as: William and Margaret Newlin. So, either someone gave her wrong birth month to the Newspaper; and the wrong birth year to the funeral home. Or, it was a "type-error."

(Husband): Arthur Frederick Smith.

Bessie Virginia Newlin married Arthur Frederick Smith, on (December 15th, 1913) in Winchester, Opequon, Frederick County, Virginia.

(Noted): Census was taken on (June 21st, 1900) by Enumerator: Jno [John] Clark Cather. Census also stated that William and Margaret were married around (1881); and that they had (6) children; but that (4) were still living (but this would be an error) as Margaret had ("7" Children in all): (1) Claude Elmer Cooper (1877-1954), (2) William Frederick Newlin (1882-1891), (3) Ralph Cleveland Newlin (1884-1957), (4) No-Named Infant Daughter (1886-1886), (5) Gola "Goldie" Lavinia Newlin (1888-1942), (6) Bessie Virginia Newlin (1890-1954), and (7) Salem Elijah Newlin (1892-1958). Ancestry.com has "Goley" down as (Gaby), but her name is (Gola "Goldie" Lavina Newlin).

(1910 Census): Under her father, William R. Newlin.

(Head) William R. Newlin, 50, (1860) Virginia, Farmer

(Wife) Margaret E. Newlin, 50, (1860) Va.

(daughter) Bessie V. Newlin, 19, (1891) Va.

(son) Salem Newlin, 17, (1893) Va, Farm Laborer

Living in: Shawnee District, Frederick County, Virginia.

(Noted) Census was taken on (April 18th, 1910) by Enumerator: Charles H. Harper Jr. Census states that William & Margaret were married for "28," years; around (1882), and, that, William and Margaret had (6) children, and that only (4) were still living (but this would be an error) as Margaret had ("7" Children in all): (1) Claude Elmer Cooper (1877-1954), (2) William Frederick Newlin (1882-1891), (3) Ralph Cleveland Newlin (1884-1957), (4) No-Named Infant Daughter (1886-1886), (5) Gola "Goldie" Lavinia Newlin (1888-1942), (6) Bessie Virginia Newlin (1890-1954), and (7) Salem Elijah Newlin (1892-1958). Bessie's Mother (Margaret Elizabeth "Lizzie" {Cooper} Newlin would die a month later on (May 27th, 1910) at their home. Then, Bessie Virginia Newlin married Arthur Frederick Smith, on (December 15th, 1913) in Winchester, Opequon, Frederick County, Virginia, and then she had their only child, a son (Lester Gilbert Smith) on (September 10th, 1914) in Winchester, Opequon, Frederick County, Virginia. (Also Noted): Bessie's Father (William Rease Newlin) later died on (March 19th, 1915), in Winchester, Opequon, Frederick County, Virginia. Both Bessie's parents are buried at the old "St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery" (now called Saint Peter Lutheran Church Cemetery) off of Cedar Creek Grade, in Frederick County, Virginia.

(Noted): Bessie Virginia Newlin married Arthur Frederick Smith (the son of Charles Isaac Smith and Sarah Louisa Cooper) on (December 15th, 1913) in Winchester, Opequon, Frederick County, Virginia.

(1920 U.S. Census) Under her husband, Arthur F. Smith.

(Under Heritage Quest):

(Head) Arthur F. Smith 36 (1884) Virginia

(Wife) Bessie V. Smith, 26 (1894) Va.

(son) Lester G. Smith, 5 (1915) Va.

Living in: Lamp Precinct, Back Creek District, Frederick Co, Virginia.

(Noted) Census was taken on (February 21st through 23rd, 1920) by Enumerator: James F. Morrison. Arthur's occupation was that of a (Teamster/Hauling Wood) for a Lumberyard. And, Arthur's (parents) Charles I., and Sarah L. Smith; are living next door... (NOTED): Bessie's AGE is Wrong (since Bessie was born in "1890," she would be "30," years old).

(1930 Census) Under her husband, A. L. Smith.

(Under Heritage Quest):

(Head) A. F. Smith, 47 (1883) Virginia

(Wife) Bessie Smith, 30 (1900) Va.

(son) Lester G. Smith, 14 (1916) Va.

Living in: "Southeast Part" Back Creek District, Frederick Co, Virginia.

(Noted) Census was taken on (April 2nd, 1930) by Enumerator: Wm [William] B. Sager. Heritage Quest has Arthur's middle initial down "wrong," as an "L." But, it's actually an "F." That's just the way the Census Reader saw it, and entered it in wrong on the computer. And, Arthur's Occupation was that of a "Threshing/Saw Mill" Lumberyard Worker, and Arthur's "Widowed" Mother (Sarah Louisa Smith) is living next door. (Also Noted): Bessie's AGE is Wrong, again, because since she was born in "1890," she would be (40 years old).

(1940 Census): Under herself, Bessie V. Smith.

(Head) Bessie V. Smith 49 (1891) Va. "Widowed"

(Son) Lester G. Smith 25 (1915) Va. "Single."

Living in: Back Creek, Frederick County, Virginia.

(Noted): Census was taken on (April 23rd & 24th, 1940) by Enumerator: George A. Ebersole. Census Recorder Reader put down the wrong middle initial for Lester, putting it down as a (B), but, if you look "CLOSELY," you can tell it's really a (G), because the Census Enumerator just wrote their "G" funny (because if you look at other (G) letters on the same Census Record, you will see Lester's middle initial is clearly a (G). Plus, the Census Records stated that they lived on Street: Wardensville Grade. And, that, Bessie was listed as a (Housekeeper); and her son (Lester) was a (Sawyer) working at a Saw Mill, as a Lumber Saw Worker.
