She was born on March 12, 1919 in Black Creek, the daughter of the late Charles and Nellie Mae (Thomas) Swanson.
On March 30, 1937, she was united in marriage to Walter H. Hitt in Wausau. He preceded her in death on June 27, 1996.
Irene worked as a waitress at Superior Lunch in Antigo for many years. Walter and Irene then owned and operated the Rocket Grill in Antigo for a couple of years. She was a lifelong member of Hogarty Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the ladies aid. In later years, she joined New Horizon's Methodist Church and was active in the UMW. Irene enjoyed going to bible study, crocheting, and visiting with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty (Larry) Evans, Antigo and Kathy Klemm, Weston; two sons, Ronald (Gloria) Hitt, Mosinee and Wally (Susan) Hitt, Marinette; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Florence Schroeder, Schofield and one sister-in-law, Geraldine Swanson, Antigo.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Lottie Roberts, Helen Nelson, Clara Dietz and Lila Barker, five brothers, George, Melvin, Gordon, Gene and Charles, Jr. and one great-great grandson, Walter Charles Hitt, III.
Visitation:
Visitation will be on Monday from 12noon until the time of services at the funeral home.
Service:
The Funeral Service will be at 2pm on Monday, February 1, 2010 at Schmidt Schulta Funeral Home, Birnamwood. Rev. Loretta Waegli will officiate.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in Hogarty Riverside Cemetery, town of Harrison in the spring.
