Married 29 June 1920 Tylertown, Walthall Co., MS, Eula "Wessie" Brumfield. They were the parents of four children: Ralph, Joseph, Vernon, and Robert.

He was ordained 1917 as a Presbyterian minister. He received higher education at Washington & Lee University and Southern Presbyterian University: AB, BD TH, and MDD. Robert served as paster in many churches and was Regional Director of Religious Education of the Presbyterian Church, USA.
