Charles B. "Pop" McCoy 87, Lawrence, Indiana passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2006. Everyone called him "Pop". To his four granddaughters he was Pop ‘Coy and to his three great grandchildren he was Pop-Pop. He was born November 29, 1918 to Ernest L. and Fairly Y. McCoy in their family home in Lawrence. Mr. McCoy was a 1939 graduate of Lawrence High School. He was considered Lawrence's oldest living native. His family was among the first settlers in Lawrence Township. He was a charter and lifetime member of the Lawrence Fire Department, which was established in 1936. His father was Lawrence's first town president. Chuck served as an Assistant Chief for the fire department from 1937 until his retirement in 1982. During his career he saved many lives, taught hundreds of firefighters and received numerous awards including the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award. Chuck was married to Wilma Mae McCoy (Gaines) who preceded him in death in December of 1980. His brother, Bruce; sisters, Rema Hartman, Bernice Hickman, Mary Elizabeth Gaugh and Charlene Downey, also preceded him in death. He is survived by a brother, Edgar McCoy (Norma), Lawrence; sister Donna Sullivan (Gene), San Jose, CA., two sons, Charles II (Joan) and James (Rebecca) both of Lawrence; four granddaughters, Shannon Binkley (Jeremy), Julie Timmons (Mike), Joyce McCoy, and Crystal Jackson (Aaron); and close friend, Blanche Whyde. He also has one great grandson and two great granddaughters. He was a member of Lawrence United Methodist Church. Mr. McCoy worked many years at U.S. Naval Avionics in Indianapolis, retiring as Fire Chief of the facility in 1977. He served in the US Army Air Corp during WW II and later in the US Air Force Reserve with the 434th Troop Carrier Wing at Bakalar Air Force Base, Columbus, Indiana. He served in many campaigns including the Korean War, Berlin Air Lift, and the Cuban Missile Crisis to name a few. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating in his earlier days. He was also active as a Boy Scout Merit Badge Councilor for several years and worked on the fire safety crew at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for more than 30 years. He is a former member of the Indiana Firefighters Association and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Friends may call at Flanner Buchanan Funeral Center-Lawrence on Friday, September 15, 2006 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Celebration of Mr. McCoy's life will be held Saturday, September 16, 2006, 2:30 p.m. at the funeral center, where friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the service.
