Abel was the youngest of eleven children born to Daniel Wilder and Mary Gould. He married Hannah Payne (a daughter of Thomas Payne) in 1808 at Eastham (Barnstable County), Massachusetts. Abel moved his new bride to Chittenden County, Vermont. He was a carpenter and farmer. In the summer of 1816 Abel moved with his wife and (then) five children to farmland two miles outside of Malone (Franklin County), New York. There he built the family home and much of the furniture within its walls. Five more children would be born on that farm to Abel and Hannah. They had a total of ten children, six sons and four daughters.
