Ireland, Ind., Mrs. Elizabeth Mathias Bonta, widow of the Rev. Edward E. Bonta, died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. DeWitt T. Hobbs, in Evansville, Ind., Saturday July 25, 1931, having attained the ripe old age of 85 years, 7 months, and 18 days. Death was due to a complication of diseases.
Mrs. Bonta was born near Madison, Ind., on Dec. 7, 1845, and resided there until 1865 when she was united in marriage to the Rev. Edward E. Bonta, a young and prominent minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. For 43 years she shared the work of the ministry with her devoted companion, who held a number of pastorates, including the Ireland C.P. Church (now known as the Presbyterian Church). Several years ago her husband retired from the active work of the ministry and with his wife and granddaughter, Jennie VanFleet Bonta, located on a small farm west of Otwell, where they resided until August 25, 1908 when Rev. Bonta met his death accidentally. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Bonta and her granddaughter moved to Ireland, where they lived until about eight years ago when Miss Jennie became the wife of DeWitt T. Hobbs, who held a lucrative position at Evansville. Mrs. Bonta then went to Evansville to make her home with Mr. & Mrs. Hobbs, with whom she spent her sunset days.
Mrs. Bonta was of a friendly and genial disposition which characteristic won her many friends. She was ever ready to do her part in all works of Christianity and was beloved by one and all, and her passing will be mourned by her large circle of friends.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Claude Durr, of Shelbyville, KY, and Mrs. Fred Dillon of CA, besides a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One son and one daughter preceded her in death several years ago. She is also survived by one brother and two sisters of Madison, IN.
The remains, in charge of Alvah D. Alexander, were brought from Evansville to Ireland Monday morning and funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church at 10:30 o'clock, with the Rev. T.A. Wigginton, pastor of the Washington Avenue Presbyterian Church of Evansville officiating. Following the services at the church the funeral cortege motored to the old Shiloh Cemetery, southeast of Ireland, where the remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband. The honorary pall-bearers were Mrs. Adeline Greene, Mrs. Carrie Armstrong, Mrs. Lucy Stewart, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson, Mrs. Effa Glezen and Mrs. Bertha DeMotte.
