Miss Maggie Reese and Cord Diercks were married Thursday morning at ten o'clock at the German Lutheran church at Goodhue, the Rev. P. Hinderer officiating. This was one of the largest and most numerously attended weddings ever held in this vicinity. Several hundred people attended the reception which was held immediately following the ceremony at the church. The party commenced to dance at 3:30 pm and danced until the next morning. Music was furnished by the Holstad's band. All those present reported a most enjoyable time. Their many friends wish them a long and happy life. --Red Wing Republican - June 3, 1897

"My mother was a most remarkable person. She spent a lot of time helping others and a lot of it without ever being compensated for it. She would help friends, neighbors, relatives, and of course her own children after they were married and and started to raise their own families.
My mother was a "Jack of all Trades". In the depression days she made clothes for a number of grandchildren. She would use her sewing machine and take older clothing that adults had and was more or less worn out. From this she would make coats, jackets, coveralls, overalls, trousers and shirts for some of her grandchildren... My mother could make many tasty cooked or baked foods from most any kind of cheaper ingredients that you could think of... My folks made a number of different kinds of sausages (metwurst, gritwurst, liverwurst, bratwurst, head cheese and blood sausage)... When we were still farming, my mother also did a lot of the work that men normally did, too. She could milk cows, drive horses on wagons or machinery, shock grain bundles, etc." --Willis Diercks' 1992 book, "From Then to Now - Remembrances of 20th Century Goodhue County Life and Times"
