ANOTHER EARLY SETTLER
One by one it becomes our sad duty to record the passing of some of the people of Goodhue or nearby neighborhoods, this week it being Mrs. Margaretha Diercks of Goodhue township whose obituary is contained in this column, she having passed away at the old home a short way northeast of the village on Thursday, December 9, after a few weeks illness, aged nearly 83 years, and her funeral was conducted by Rev. Hinnenthal from St. John's German Lutheran church on Monday, the 13th, attended by a very large number of relatives and friends who were present to pay their respects to and bid farewell over the remains of a beloved christian woman who had ever been a helpful member in the church of her faith, a highly esteemed neighbor and a true and loving helpmate and mother. Burial was made in the cemetery near the church, the casket being born to its last resting place by six grand-children as follows: Edward J., Bernard J., Leonard, Harold and John H. Diercks and Reynold Vieths.

Margaretha Matthees, her maiden name, was born at Amt York, Province of Hanover, Germany, February 26, 1838, came to America first to Red Wing and two years later to the old home where she thereafter made her residence having been married in Germany to J. H. Diercks in 1864, he having answered death's call January 5, 1917. She is survived by four sons John P., of Milwaukee, and Peter Henry and Kurt of Goodhue; two daughters Mrs. J. C. Oelkers of Oakland, California, and Mrs. Nick Matthees of Goodhue, besides one sister and one brother in Germany. She also leaves thirty-six grand children.

Those from afar who came to attend the funeral were John Dammann and Mr. and Mrs. John Matthees of Clearwater, Minn., and John P. Diercks of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. --Goodhue Enterprise - December, 1920
