"Mrs. James Smith died Sunday morning at 11:25 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John G. Buchanan, 1200 North Madison avenue, from old age. She had been a resident of Bay City for 18 years. Mrs. Smith was born in the township of Ramsey, county of Lanark, Ont., August 7, 1829 and was married to James Smith there in 1850. She is survived by one brother, Daniel Galbraith of Mikado, Mich., and the following children: Mrs. Samuel Barber, of Winnipeg; Mrs. Catherine Thompson, Mrs. John Smith, of Saskatchewan; Mrs. William Barber, Mrs. Peter Smith, all of Saskatchewan; Mrs. J. G. Buchanan of this city; Mrs. D. R. Buchanan, of Drayton, N.D., and D. M. Smith, of Minot, N.D. She is also survived by 41 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Since childhood she had been a member of the Baptist denomination. The funeral will take place Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence." (Bay City Daily Times, May 15, 1916, p. 3)
