War of 1812, Col. William Dickinson, commander of the 10th Reg. Virginia militia, knew John Slack as a private in Capt. Joshua Early's company of the 5th and 3rd regiment before and after the War of 1812.
September 1, 1814 Nancy Slack, aged 70 years, stated her husband was drafted or volunteered at Bedford March 28, 1851.
Residence: Settled with his family at what is now known as Witcher, along Witcher's Creek, which flows into the Kanawha River (slightly over a half-mile away), about 17 miles SE of Charleston, WV. His descendants and kin still live on the property and in the area.
