E.M. (Grand Pyle) and Susan Stanley Pyle set out for Kansas in 1878 in a covered wagon with their children: Effie, Nell and Etna Maurice Jr. After spending the first winter in Medicine Lodge, they moved to a small ranch west of Sun City and entered the cattle business. Here Myrtle, Franklin, Eben and Edgar were born. In 1884, they moved to what is now Kiowa County. They lived briefly north of Belvidere, where Capitola was born, before taking up school land six miles south and two miles east of Haviland. There they built a house and lived until their death.
