James was born at the Springfield Plantation House in Laurens County. In 1821, he began attending Franklin College in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia.

Letter written by Brigadier General David Blackshear from Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia, to his son James at Franklin College:
May 14, 1821.
Dear James:--I again write you by Mr. Golding, although I have written by Major Meriwether, and by whom I have sent you some money. I expect to leave this place to-morrow for home. I have heard that your mother is yet complaining of the asthma. The rest of the family are getting better.
When you receive the money, take care that you do not spend or otherwise dispose of it only as you are obliged to do. Be sure to keep out of bad company, and do not be persuaded to do any thing that is improper. Be advised by your cousins and those gentlemen I recommended you to in my last. Never place yourself in a situation to deny what you know to be true, and always have a strict eye on what will support a good character. You can hardly conceive how easy it is for a youth to injure his character, which is rarely ever recovered; that is, if you should do any thing with other boys, you will all be implicated, and when you become a man it will not be forgotten. If you conduct yourself well, you will always be respected by good people. I have great solicitude for your welfare; and, having written you so lately, have nothing more. Your loving father,
D. Blackshear.
(The Bench and Bar of Georgia: Memoirs and Sketches, Volume 1, by Stephen F Miller, J P Lippincott & Co, Philadelphia, 1858, p 468)

James selected a college major in 1822, and graduated in 1826. He married Caroline Eliza Louisa Floyd (a daughter of Major General John Floyd ) on July 2, 1828, at the Bellevue Plantation House in Camden County, Georgia. He served as a battalion commander, and as a member of the Georgia State Legislature, and was admired for his intelligence and noble qualities.

"They had two sons, who died young, and two daughters, Fanny Maria and Isabella Sarah." (A Little Family History by Mary Hazzard Floyd Hamilton, The Morning News Press, 1906, p 17)

"Major James Blackshear died this day between 11 & 12 A. M. at his residence in Laurens County. He was nearly 40 years of age, & was an excellent man."
(Charles Rinaldo Floyd's Journal - February 23, 1845)

"Rec'd. a letter from Mrs. Hamilton announcing the death of Majr. Jas. Blackshear. He died at his residence in Laurens County on the 23rd ultimo, aged 39 years, 3 months & 19 days. Majr. Blackshear was truly an excellent man, & long will his loss be deplored by his family & friends. He expired in a very calm & peaceful manner."
(Charles Rinaldo Floyd's Journal - April 2, 1845)
