Caroline was born at the Fairfield Plantation House in Camden County. She married James Hamilton Blackshear (a son of Brigadier General David Blackshear) on July 2, 1828, at the Bellevue Plantation House in Camden County, Georgia.

"They had two sons, who died young, and two daughters, Fanny Maria and Isabella Sarah." (A Little Family History by Mary Hazzard Floyd Hamilton, The Morning News Press, 1906, p 17)

On a visit to Darien, McIntosh County, Georgia, Caroline was shopping with her brother's wife, Ann Hunt [Alston] Floyd, when her brother John Fendin Floyd encountered Allen B. Powell, who killed him.

"This sad event took place on the 25th of January, 1830, when he was twenty-eight years old. This is one of the saddest events in our family history." (A Little Family History by Mary Hazzard Floyd Hamilton, The Morning News Press, 1906, p 16)

Later that year, James and Caroline moved their family to Laurens County, Georgia. After her husband's death in 1845, she took charge of the farm and was involved in the buying and selling of land. By 1860, she was living at the residence of her daughter Fannie and her son-in-law James Emmett Blackshear in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia.

By November 1860, Caroline had moved with Emmett and Fannie, and Isabella, to Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. Her daughter Isabella died in February 1862, leaving Fannie as Caroline's only remaining child. In 1864, Emmett's father died, and his mother Elizabeth and sister Leila came to live with Emmett and his family. In Macon, Caroline and Elizabeth spent their time assisting Fannie with raising the children.
