By the passing of John Chalupnik, whose death occurred at his home south of Traer last Sunday, Carroll township has lost her oldest citizen, one of her most successful farmers and a man in every way worthy of the high regard in which he was held by his neighbors and friends. He had suffered more or less from troubles incident to old age several years. Mr. Chalupnik was born in Bohemia August 13, 1848, and came to America when 19 years of age. The first few years of his residence here he worked in a quarry, but when a young man he invested his savings in a piece of cheap land in Carroll township. Here for more than sixty years he farmed with much success. In 1871 he married Anna Kosina, who still survives.
The couple are parents of ten children, eight daughters and two sons, all of whom are yet living and located in Tama County, namely: Mrs. Frank Seda and Mrs.F. L. Podhajsky, of Traer; Mrs. Frank Zmolek, Buckingham; Mrs. Frank Chamara, Chelsea; Mrs. Frank Lacina, Tama; Mrs. Vince Kunch and Mrs. C Dolezal, toldeo; J. K. and L. F. Chalupnik, Carroll township; and Christina, at homes. There are thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Surviving are also two brothers and four sisters.
