OBITUARY
Jesse Gordon, son of Charles and Lydia Jessup Gordon, was born at Newport, Wayne county, Indiana, August 31, 1832. Of the six boys and four girls in the family, five survive, Robert of Indianapolis, Oliver of Union City, Martha Macy of Iowa, Emily Taylor and Clarkson Gordon of Spiceland. By the death of his mother, he was thrown upon his own resources early in life. He was one of the few who attended the old school at Spiceland; was a lifelong member of the society of Friends, and a member of the Henry County Historical society. He was interested deeply in the financial, educational and religious development of the community; was an original trustee of Spiceland academy on which board he served nearly twenty years; was an organizer of Spiceland's chautauqua, then called the lycetum, or lecture course. The death of Jesse Gordon brings regret to the whole community, as he is one of a type of those sturdy pioneers of which few remain. The funeral was held at the Friends church at Spiceland on Monday afternoon at three o'clock. Among those who were present from a distance were all the remaining brothers and sister, except Mrs. Macy of Iowa. Homer Cloud, Ada Slatker, John Evans and wife and Martha Perry, all of Hamilton county; Ed Evans of Chicago; Clint Taylor of Franklin; Elwood Barnard, wife and daughter, Eden; Goldie Abbott of Indianapolis; Mrs. Robert Gordon of Indianapolis and Mrs. Oliver Gordon of Union City.
