OBIT:

One of the Emerald Empire's pioneer farmers, John Henry Seavey of Eugene, died Thursday at the age of 85 after a short illness. Mr. Seavey, who lived at 2089 Potter St. in recent years, would have reached his 86th birthday today. He was born at the Seavey Ranch on the McKenzie River on June 16, 1875, and was a lifelong resident of Lane County.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. daylight at the First Methodist Church in Eugene. The Rev. Robert Kingsbury, Methodist student pastor at the University of Oregon, will officiate. Liberty Lodge No. 171, AF & AM, Springfield, will conduct concluding services at Rest Haven Memorial Park. Buell Chapel, Springfield, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Seavey was one of seven children of Lane County pioneers Alexander Seavey and Sara Anne Blachley Seavey. With his brothers Jess and Jim, he founded the Seavey Hop Co. and they became the Emerald Empire's first hop growers. They continued growing hops until 1936.

In the early 1890s. Mr. Seavey attended the University of Oregon where he played football. At one time he won a gold medal as the best bicycle racer in the state. During his lifetime he helped promote cooperatives, river work, bank protection and rural telephones, according to his family.

At the time of his death, Mr. Seavey was still active in farming and was managing a walnut orchard on his 1000 acre ranch on Seavey Loop Road near Goshen. A life member of Liberty Masonic Lodge, Springfield, Mr. Seavey was also a member of Evangeline Chapter of Eastern Star and First Methodist Church.

Survivors include his widow, Alice Stewart Seavey, whom he married on June 5, 1907; one sister, Mrs. Atwilda Wassom, Coburg; three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Kienzie, Mrs. Alvan Parker and Mrs. W. P. Hambleton, all of Eugene; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Donations in Mr. Seavey's memory may be made to the building fund at First Methodist Church, Eugene, or to the Cancer Fund.
