On Sunday morning, Dec. 13, 1914, at their home of her daughter, Mrs. F.J. Smith, of Salem, Mrs. Adeline F. Bassett entered the better life, after a long and painful illness.
Few people in this world had so many friends and so few enemies as the deceased. To know Mrs. Bassett was to be her friend. Even in her last illness the same kind smile was given to all. Ever solicitous for the welfare of others, she forgot her own suffering to advise and counsel with those near and dear to her.
Adeline Foster was born September 26, 1831, at Hannibal, Oswego county, New York, and was 83 years, two months and 17 days old at the time of her death. When she was ten years of age her parents drove overland to Wisconsin, and settled in Salem township, where they resided until their death. She was married January 1, 1856, to Volney Bassett. Three children were born to them: Mrs. F.J. Smith of Salem, Dr. F.W. Bassett of Los Angeles, Cal., and Prof. L.E. Bassett of Stanford university, California.
Since the death of her husband in 1891, she has lived in her home in Salem, with the exception of the time spent in California visiting her sons, spending several months at each visit. Seven times she has made the trip to the Pacific coast.
