Stephen Gascoigne was a student at Dr. Smith's Charity School, and seasonal farmer in Islip, Oxfordshire, England. His transcripts state "Stephen GASCOIGNE in his 8th year 'taken out' 17 March 1854: Stephen GASCOIGNE taken out of the school for field labour by his parents". He arrived in Canada at the age of 12 (1856) according to the 1910 US Federal Census. He lived in Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario, Canada with his parents William Gaskins and Ann Marcham before moving to Plainfield, Illinois about 1861. His parents and siblings moved to Ontario, Canada from England around 1856. He was naturalized on 3 Oct 1870 in Henry County, MO, as noted on the California Census of 25 Aug 1873. During the Civil War, on 2 Aug 1862 in Plainfield, Illinois, Stephen (18) joined Company E, 100th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, He was wounded in action on 30 Nov 1864 in Franklin, Tenn. He was discharged in Nashville, Tenn. on 12 June 1865. He married Emma Ann Park in Missouri at the age of 25, Emma Ann was 16. Emma Ann Park was born in Pennsylvania. They were married at the Methodist Episopal Church in Chillicothe, Livingston, Missouri, 5 Sep 1869 by Rev. A.C. Higgins pastor. After the Civil War, Stephen attended Plainfield, Illinois College (1865-69). According to the Methodist Conference Roll of 1891, he was teaching in a university at the age of 24. In 1867, he was admitted to the Missouri Conference of the Methodist Church and became a Minister for the Methodist Episcopal Church (starting in St. Louis) from 1869 to about 1904 in the Los Angeles area. The family lived in various cities across the U.S. where Stephen was a minister. Along their journey, they had five children: Ann (b1870), Mary (b1873), William (b1876), Stephen (b1878), and Albert C (b1889). Emma Ann died at the age of 60 in Pasadena, CA, due to eating poisonous mushrooms from her garden. This was stated by her great grandson Roy Wilson (Washington)and her Certificate of Death. Stephen, after the passing of Emma Ann, and at the age 70, married his second wife, Lola M. Wilson (33) of Missouri, on 10 June 1914 in Los Angeles at the First M. E. Church. The 1920 Census reports that Stephen Gascoigne (although still married to Lola) was living in Malibu township, Los Angeles, CA at the National Military Home where he died on 31 Oct 1934. At that time, Malibu township included the area where the V.A. Hospital and Sawtelle Old Soldiers Home are located in Brentwood, Los Angeles, CA. That is where he died and was buried.
