Sarah Taylor Sutton Simpson Biography

Sarah Sutton married William Simpson on April 11,1823. They were married in Fayette County, Indiana. Sarah was about 25 years old and William was 20 years old. Sarah and William lived in Waterloo Township, Fayette County, Indiana. They had six sons who grew to adulthood.

Sarah’s first son was William Jackson Simpson. William Jackson “Jack” was born on March 8, 1827 almost four years after her and William were married. Her next children were: Benjamin Franklin Simpson (1830-1906), Thomas M Simpson (1832-1865), George Willis Simpson (1837-1874), Franklin Simpson (1839-) and Francis Marion Simpson (1840-1909). At the time of this writing, this author knows or an infant, Sarah J Simpson, lived for two months, March 4, 1833 through May 6, 1833. There were, most likely, other infant deaths for Sarah, but there are no exact documents available. Sarah J Simpson is buried in the Little Simpson Cemetery on N County Road 450 E in Lyonsville, Jennings Township, Indiana.

Sarah lived with William for twenty years. During this time she had more than seven children. Her youngest son was Francis Marion who was born September 16, 1840 at the family home in Waterloo. At the time of Sarah’s death, July 21, 1843, She left six children. Her youngest Francis Marion was 3 years old, Franklin was 4 years old, George Willis was 6 years old, Thomas M was 11 years old, Benjamin Franklin was 13 years old and her oldest son William Jackson was 16 years old. With Sarah’s early death, leaving 6 children to take care of, William found and amazing woman, Ada Gaby. William married Ada 14 months after the passing of Sarah. Ada was truly a gifted person who raised Sarah’s six children, but she also had about eight children of her own.

Sarah’s six children became honorable and impressive people. Some of the children married and had numerous grandchildren. More importantly and interestingly enough, five of Sarah’s sons were enlisted into the Civil War. All of them survived the Civil War to enjoy another 20 plus years except for Thomas who passed away soon after he returned home.

Sarah was not around to see how her son’s gave their time, energies and cost to the Civil War but I will briefly outline some of their accomplishments:

William Jackson Simpson (1827-1889) Enlisted December 2 1863 as a Private and served the State of Indiana. William enlisted in Company E, Indiana 11th Calvalry Regiment on December 29, 1863. He Mustered out on June 26, 1865. Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana.

Benjamin F Simpson (1830-1906) Enlisted in Company D, Indiana 42nd Infantry Regiment on January 6, 1864. His enlistment rank was Private. He mustered out on July 21, 1865 at Louisville, KY. Reported by the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana.

Thomas M Simpson (1832- 1865) Enlisted April 23 1861. He was enlisted in Company E, Indiana 16th Infantry Regiment. Thomas was mustered out on May 23, 1862 in Washington DC.

George Simpson (1837-1874) was enlisted in the Company E, Indiana 11th Infantry Regiment as a Private. George received a headstone provided for deceased Union Civil War Veterans. The stone and George’s burial is found at the Little Simpson Cemetery at Lyonsville, Indiana.

Franklin Simpson (1839-) no information available.

Francis Marion Simpson (1840-1909) was enlisted in Company C with the Indiana 11th Infantry Regiment. His enrollment date was August 31, 1861 and he was mustered out at Baltimore, Maryland on July 26, 1865.

Sarah and William had amazing children and they grew up to be courageous, honorable people.
