Samuel served under Capt. McNitta at the defenses of Sackett's Harbor and Plattsburg during the War of 1812. Samuel J. Dean settled on Lot 56, South Survey, where he died. Samuel died when he was crushed to death by a tree stump remover which fell on him. Some accounts say they had six children, others eight. Nancy Dean and Sharlot Bates are not their children, even though they are buried next to Samuel & Martha in the Italy/Naples Cemetery.
