Lester R. "Smitty" Smith, age 83, died April 17, 1999 at Zephyrhills, Florida.

Lester R. Smith was born October 27, 1915 at West Liberty, Iowa, the son of Guy and Carrie (Browning) Smith. The family moved to Wyoming, then moved to Colorado by covered wagon. In 1930 he moved back to Muscatine.

He married Mary Zimmerman. He later married Margy McCoy on Nov. 23, 1973, at Van Buren, Missouri.

Smitty worked for Henderson's Garage. From 1954 to 1991 he owned and operated his owngarage, "Smitty's", in Muscatine. In 1991 he moved to Rochester, Iowa and in 1993 retired to Zephyrhills, Florida.

Lester was a lifetime member of the Muscatine Moose Lodge and Muscatine Eagles Lodge. He was a past member of the Elks.

Survivors include his wife, Margy Smith of Florida and a son, Neil Smith of England; also four step-daughters: Christine (Joel) Voguel, Muscatine, Darla (George) Hills, Muscatine; Marcy (Jim) Schell, Muscatine and Dorene
(Kirk) Chatfield of Florida. There are eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Two sisters also survive: Evelyn Tompkins of Calao, MO and Dolores Hansen, Rochester, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry; a brother, Verle; and a grandson, Mathew.

Funeral services were held April 24 at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home in Muscatine. Rev. Don Bundy officiated. Nancy Sparrow was organist for the service and vocalists were Charles and Nancy Sparrow.

Pallbearers were Charles Sparrow, Bob Jones, Lional Gatto, Roy Miller, Earl Schmeltzer and Gerald Murray. Honorary bearers were Gene Bilton, Russell Stone, Rufus Tompkins and Glen Stuart.

Burial was at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.
