He spent his early childhood in England, where he was raised on a farm and received only twelve months of schooling. He came to America May 4, 1843, and located in Richland Co. Ohio. In 1850 he went to California during the gold rush and engaged in the mining and merchandise business.

After the death of his first wife, he came to Mills Co. and bought land - 200 acres to begin with and later totalling 1000 acres. He married Lucinda Anne Gonser March 14, 1861. They were the parents of ten children.

He was a member of the Board of Supervisors in Mills County for four years and chairman for two years. He was one of the original founders of Wesley Chapel Church and a charter member.
