It was likely that Mrs.Meyer was the last survivor of the five hundred "Wends" who left their home near Donhau,Saxony,Germany,in 1854,to seek a place where they could live and worship undisturbed according to the principles of their Lutheran faith.

At the age of nine, she came with the emigrants to Texas.Though 73 of the 500 who left their homes died during the long and perilous journey,Mary and her parents were spared.A few of the colonists remained in New Ulm while the majority moved on to Serbin in Lee County. She was one who remained. Thus it was in New Ulm that she met and married J.D. Meyer. The young people moved to the Mentz section where they came to be the founders of Zoar Lutheran Church.

Funeral services for Mary Meyer were conducted from the Henry Meyer home of the Mentz section Monday afternoon,Rev.W.A. Flachmeier officiating.

Pallbearers were the following grandchildren Lee Meyer,Leroy Kotzebue,Herbert Meyer,Kermit Meyer,Daniel Berger and Marcus Kansteiner.
