Obituary: Daniel Meyer Dies at Age of 75 After Lingering Illness

Had Lived on Bernard Since His Marriage Many Years Ago

A shadow of sorrow was cast over the entire Bernardo country last Tuesday morning, October 17, by the death of Daniel Meyer, who departed this life at the age of 75 years. His health had been failing since last February and he had been confined to his bed for 18 days. During his illness, everything that medical skill and loving hands could do was done, but to no avail. His savior called and his soul took flight to a better world. His death was not unexpected to his grief stricken family and sorrowing friends.

Interment was made Wednesday afternoon, a great concourse of friends and relatives gathering at the home of the deceased at 3 o'clock and going from there to the Lutheran [Zoar] cemetery. He was a member of the Lutheran church for many years and Rev. Lindenberg of the Frelsburg Lutheran church conducted the services, paying a touching tribute to the memory of one who had been a devoted husband and loving father. Members of the Columbus Lutheran choir rendered several of the dear old familiar Hymns during the service. Acting as pall bearers were Gus Renken, Henry Grabow, Otto Hill, Henry Kansteiner, Fritz Kansteiner and Chas. Duddleston.

Mr. Meyer was born in Germany March 11, 1847, and came to the United States with his parents when still a young boy. They settled in Austin county. In 1869 he was married to Miss Maria Kasper. He and his wife moved to the place two miles from Bernardo 51 years ago, where their long companionship was broken by the husband. There were nine children born to their union, of which one son, Charley Meyer, preceded his father to his grave. The others were all present at their father's funeral. They are: Herman, Louis, Henry and Daniel Meyer, Mrs. Frank Diedrich, Mrs. Julius Kotzebue, Mrs. Edwin Berger and Mrs. Phillip Kansteiner. There are 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His brothers, of which there are four were all present at the funeral. They are Ernest, William, Louis, and Ferdinand Meyer. His sisters who survive him are Mrs. Henry Barten, Mrs. Paul Max, Mrs. Sophie Berger of Goliad county and Mrs. Fritz Dabelgott of Travis county. All of them were present for the funeral.

Mr. Meyer was a member of Home Circle lodge of Cat Spring. He was an honest upright citizen of noble character always lending a hand in the upbuilding of the community and school. His loss will be felt by all who knew him. A beautiful array of floral offerings mantled the new made grave Wednesday afternoon when he was laid to rest, lovely expressions of sympathy for the bereaved family in their great sorrow. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in the community, many people being present from Cat Spring, Sealy, Bellville, and from all parts of Colorado county.

People who came from a distance, besides those already mentioned, were Mr. and Mrs. Manley Kotzebue of Manor and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bellow of Goliad.
