William Leland Shaver was a farmer in Rhea County all his life. He also was in the Gas station business at two different times, before WW II with the Shaver brothers and after the War with his sons. During WW II William Leland worked for Union Carbide at Clinton, TN (Oak Ridge project) while Katholeen and the oldest son Ray did the farming.
His family was in the strawberry business in the early days as H H Shaver and Sons, at first shipping the strawberries to Cincinnati, OH on the train. After the freezer plant came to Dayton, Leland and his wife Katholeen had purchased a farm on Dayton Mountain where he planted and commenced raising strawberries again. During WW II those family members who were not involved in the War effort, came to his place and picked strawberries.
William Leland had a brother also named "William", who had a different birth name he did not like, so he changed his name to Bill. When he was drafted into the U S Army he was made to take the name William, which was confusing to have two brothers both named William. His brother Bill (William), who was President of the Dayton Bank & Trust Co at the time of his death, is also buried in the Second Shaver Cemetery along with his wife Aline Kelly Shaver.
William Leland and his wife Katholeen had ten children, the two first ones dying as infants, William Leland Jr and Helen Louise. These two children are buried beside their parents.
