First Heavy Artillery.--Col., William Colville; Lieut.-
Col., Luther L. Baxter; Majs., Orlando Eddy, C. P.
Haffelfinger, David Misner. This regiment was organized in the
summer of 1864, mustered in by companies and ordered to
Chattanooga in the winter of 1864-65. It was composed of
twelve companies, each containing 140 men, besides the
officers. It was placed in charge of the heavy guns and forts
at Chattanooga, a responsible position, as it was thought Hood
would endeavor the retake the city. It remained there until
the war closed and was mustered out by companies in June and
Sept., 1865.
