There departed this life at his home in Irwin County, Ga., on the 18th of this month, a venerable and most worthy citizen is the person of Jacob Paulk. He was in his eighty-ninth year, and had been a citizen of Irwin County for more than sixty years. He was born Jefferson County, in this State, in 1796. Mr. Paulk was noted for the generosity of his heart - his benevolence and generosity. In his life he recognized the precept that "it is not the mere possession of wealth that renders a man happy or good, but the uses he makes of that wealth." Hundreds - indeed, we may say thousands - of travelers in the antebellum days have enjoyed the hospitality of "Uncle Jacob Paulk", as he was familiarly called. Ten years ago the editor of this paper, in company with Phil Cook, visited Mr. Paulk at his house and spent the day with him and his aged companion. We were interested in his narration of early incidents of the settlement of the country. He appeared to have a perfect recollection of matters that transported fifty to sixty years before, while incidents of more recent occurrence were scarcely remembered. Mr. Paulk was a perfect type of physical manhood; strong and vigorous in constitution, and possessing energy and industry in equal degrees.

Jacob Paulk left three sons and four daughters. His oldest son, Hon. Thomas Paulk, represented Berrien County in the last General Assembly, and his seal is the cause of temperance and good legislation won for him the esteem and confidence of his constituents and colleagues. His two other sons - Messrs. James and M.W. Paulk -- live in Irwin. The four sisters are Mrs. Sallie McMillan, wife of John McMillan, and Mrs. Margaret Gaskins, wife of John W. Gaskins, who reside in Alapaha; Mrs. Mary Fletcher, wife of John Fletcher Jr., and Mrs. Malissa Fletcher, wife of James B. Fletcher, all of whom live in Irwin. After a long and useful life, a good man and true man has been called to his reward.
