PIERSCHBACHER

Florence Estalene Patterson Pierschbacher, daughter of Guy and Grace White Patterson was born July 13, 1908 in Lincoln Township, Lucas County, and died Jan. 28, 1995 at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 15 days at the Chariton Manor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Pauline, who died in infancy ; a brother, James Donavan Patterson; her husband, Connell; one son, Clayton; and a nephew, James Thomas Patterson.

Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth; two sons, Hubert and wife Mary Lou of rural Chariton, and Dwayne of rural Lacona; daughter-in-law Marilyn Bridgford and husband Ronald of rural Chariton; three grandsons, Clifton, Bradley and wife Lisa, and John; two granddaughters, Lori Pierschbacher Kaeberle and husband Lance; and Marla Pierschbacher Kelly and husband Shawn; and four great granddaughters, Amy and Betsy Kaeberle; Kayla and Beth Pierschbacher. In addition, three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Wavel Patterson, Mrs. Dwight (Betty) Pierschbacher and Mrs. Hazel Werthle; nieces and nephews and numerous cousins also survive, including John Calvin Baker of Chicago who made his home with the Patterson family as a child.

Estalene and Connell were united in marriage on April 26, 1930 and moved the family home to north of Newbern where she continued to live until she fell and suffered a broken hip on Sept. 6, 1994. Since that time she has been hospitalized, dying at the Chariton Manor last Saturday.

She was a long time member of the Newbern Community Church, active in the Ladies Aid Society and Better Homes Club until her husband's health failed and she became his constant companion.

Home and family were important to her. She was an avid gardener and preserver of food, getting pride and satisfaction from the gleaming jars of vegetables and fruits prepared for the winter.

She attended rural school and graduated from Williamson High School. Estalene then went with parents to homestead in Montana and the Dakota's, but parents decided to return to Iowa.

The eldest of 21 "White" cousins, Estalene was a role-model, a friend and supporter of those cousins, and the cousins remained in close contact during their adult years. Eleven of the White cousins survive her.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Estalene was a good neighbor. She gave help and encouragement when needed, she listened for and celebrated the joys and successes of the neighborhood families and waited eagerly for the latest reports of childrens antics and accomplishments. Many of her neighbors became her extended family: Geral and Delphine, Jesse and Eva Lee, Lucille and Lila, all have been a valued part of her "support system" during difficult times. She enjoyed and appreciated the surprise visits of Jane, Pat, Arnie, Ron, Jeff, Craig and other younger members of the community who stopped to visit and often brought fruits of their gardens to share with her.

The greatest joy of her life has been the opportunity to enjoy five grandchildren grow to maturity and begin families and careers of their own. The arrival of each of four lively great-grandchildren was a special event in Estalene's life and those girls have brightened her declining years.

Wife of Connell A. Pierschbacher. Daughter of Guy Patterson and Grace White.
