21 Jul 1906 Daily Register Gazette – Illinois TAPS SOUNDED FOR ANOTHER VETERAN --- John R. Shoop Dies at the Home of His Son in the North End Funeral This Afternoon. --- John R. Shoop, a union veteran of the civil war, died at his home in the North end at 6:33 Friday afternoon. Mr. Shoop was a native of Pennsylvania. He came to Winnebago county in 1840, and for twenty-five years was a resident of New Milford. Prior to coming to Rockford six weeks ago he resided in Griffith, Ind., where his wife is now living. He made his home here with his son, Jerry Shoop. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Commander T.G. Lawler dispatched a detail of members of Nevins post to participate in the services. Mr. Shoop was a member of an Indiana post.

21 Jul 1906 Republic JOHN R. SHOOP DEAD --- Aged Man Died at the Home of His Son on Bruner Avenue Last Night --- John R. Shoop, 89 years old and a member of the G.A.R. died at the home of his son Jeremiah Shoop of Bruner Avenue and Young Streets at 6:33 o'clock last night. Mr. Shoop came to Rockford from Indiana about two months ago and was suffering from an injury to his foot. He had been under constant medical care until the time of his death which was caused by gangrene attacking the injury. The funeral was held this afternoon.
